Written and performed by Nashville-based Americana/Folk singer-songwriter Debra Lyn, Did You Know was inspired by the tragic death of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who was fatally shot while attending a Minneapolis protest in January 2026.
Reflecting on the fragility of life and the courage it takes to stand up for one’s beliefs, the song explores the human cost of violence, intolerance and division while encouraging listeners to “raise your voice against the noise” and choose compassion over hate.

“Like so many, I was shocked and saddened by the events in Minneapolis. I remember thinking that Alex most likely woke up that morning never imagining that standing up for what he believed in would cost him his life.
This song is a tribute to those who peacefully raise their voices against the noise of hatred and intolerance, and to all who choose empathy and understanding.”
